It's Snuggle Season

The leaves are falling, jumpers are calling, and there’s a chill in the air. Yes, friends, it’s officially snuggle season! And to help you stock up on their winter wardrobe, our resident expert on all things cosy, Teddy Teddington the Bear, is here to lend a helping paw.

Have you ever wondered what makes fleece so soft or why corduroy’s texture is described in “wales”? Our furry guide explores all this and much more. Plus, we share some of our favourite designers and outfit inspiration for your little cubs. So, grab a blanket and let’s meet the stars of their snuggliest season yet.

Fabric 1: Corduroy

“Cord is made for rolling down hills, climbing trees, and still looking smart afterwards.”

What is corduroy? Corduroy, loved for its distinct texture, is woven in ridges called “wales”— not those types of whales, silly! Wales are the raised lines you can see and feel on the fabric’s surface, almost like train tracks. The fewer the wales, the chunkier the corduroy looks. And the more wales, the finer it will feel, a bit like velvet.

Fun fact: When measuring corduroy’s ridges, the higher the wale means the finer the cord. Needlecord is the thinnest and elephant cord is the thickest.

Favourite designers: We love how Tommy Hilfiger and Frugi embrace colourful cord, while Petite Amalie dresses corduroy in the prettiest fashion.

Teddy Teddington's styling tips: "Corduroy is autumn’s most practical pal. It’s great as trousers, dungarees, or a printed dress. I love wearing wide-wale cords with a cosy knit and boots for a countryside ramble, or finer cords with statement-collared shirts for a fancy day out."

Where to wear: Think woodland wanderings or even city strolls when you want comfort and character.

“Cord is the fabric that only gets better with every outfit. The more you wear it, the softer it becomes, as if it remembers all your adventures.”

Fabric 2: Cashmere

“The clever thing about cashmere is how warm it keeps you without ever feeling heavy.”

What is cashmere? The superstar of snuggly fabrics! Cashmere is soft, luxurious, and the yarn is spun so finely that your little one will feel like they’re wrapped in a fluffy cloud.

Fun fact: Cashmere fibres are up to six times finer than human hair!

Favourite designers: Bonpoint makes dreamy jumpers and cardigans in the softest cashmere, and Beatrice & George lovingly weaves it into their classic knits.

Teddy Teddington's styling tips: “Cashmere isn’t just for jumpers. You’ll also find scarves, blankets and even coats woven in this luxurious yarn. And it’s often paired with wool for the ultimate in warmth — think of the two as best friends, working hard to keep your little one cosy.”

Where to wear: This super-soft fabric is perfect for fireside moments, Sunday lunches, or anywhere they want to feel wrapped in quiet luxury.

If I had to pack one thing for a long winter’s nap, it would be cashmere. Warm enough for the snow, soft enough for the sweetest dreams.

Fabric 3: Sherpa and Teddy Fleece

“Teddy Fleece is my favourite disguise! Put it on and you’ll look and feel like part of the bear family.”

What is fleece? Fleece comes in many guises: sherpa, teddy, and more. Sherpa is the mountain climber of fleece fabrics: warm, fluffy, and a little rugged. It’s named after the Sherpa people of Nepal (though not actually made by them) and mimics the look and feel of sheep’s wool. Teddy fleece, on the other hand, has a softer, more cuddly texture. Think of it as the comfort blanket of the fleece family, cosy and cloud-like.

Fun fact: Sherpa and teddy fleece were invented in the 1980s as a lightweight, machine-washable alternative to wool.

Favourite designers: Labels like Stella McCartney Kids and Mini Rodini are putting a playful, eco-friendly, and colourful spin on fleece designs. And we love the sherpa-suede combos from Elsy and Guess.

Teddy Teddington's styling tips: “Bring texture and warmth to any look by pairing a sherpa-lined jacket with denim, or a teddy gilet layered over knitwear. Bonus points if you add our corduroy friends too!”

Where to wear: Whether sherpa or teddy, fleece is built for adventure. Ideal for autumn hikes, pumpkin-patch outings, or walking the dog on frosty mornings. After all, this fabric is all about cuddly comfort and durability.

“Teddy fleece makes you look a little like me, which I can’t complain about. Warm, huggable, and impossible not to smile at.”

Fabric 4: Wool

“Wool has texture, character and a little bit of wildness, perfect for cubs who like a bit of adventure."

What is wool? Wool is the original cosy kid on the block. It comes from sheep’s fleece and is spun into yarn that keeps you warm while still letting your skin breathe. The fibres are a bit like tiny springs: bouncy, soft, and great at trapping air so little ones stay cosy without getting too hot. That’s why wool has been trusted for hundreds of years in coats, jumpers and blankets.

Fun fact: Wool can absorb up to 30% of its weight in moisture before feeling damp, so it’s basically a superhero against drizzle and oopsie hot-chocolate spills.

Favourite designers: Bonpoint make soft knits for all ages, Tartine et Chocolat uses wool beautifully in its collection, and Joha brings a colourful twist to traditional woolly layers.

Teddy Teddington’s styling tips: "Wool works just as well for everyday as it does for outings. Try a woollen coat with boots for frosty morning outings. Accessories, like hats, scarves, and mittens, are perfect for layering, and knitted dresses keep younger ones snug without a fuss."

Where to wear: Wool is the fabric for crisp park walks, Christmas fairs and Sunday best. It’s practical enough for everyday moments, but polished enough for special occasions.

“Wool is clever stuff. It keeps you cosy when it’s cold, cool when it’s not, and always feels like it knows exactly what you need.”

Teddy Teddington’s Cosy Conclusion

“There’s something magical about autumn and winter fabrics. The light and floaty ones tuck themselves away, and out come the textures that make you want to snuggle up. Corduroy, wool, fleece, they all take centre stage, and I couldn’t be happier.”
