Childrensalon Family Diaries | Heather Matthews

Life in lockdown has changed the daily routine for most of us, including the majority of the team at Childrensalon. Our staff of nearly 500 is made up of talented, ambitious, and hardworking people from all over the globe, many of whom have children themselves. We wanted to go behind-the-scenes and give you a view of family life from some of our very own team-members at Childrensalon.

From homeschooling to ways to stay entertained, each family does it their own way. We are inviting you for a glimpse inside the family homes of our team to see how they are spending this time together.

- Meet the Matthews Family -

Heather has worked at Childrensalon for 6 and a half years and her role as Images Manager sees her selecting the beautiful imagery for our website. Heather is from Surrey, UK, and now resides in Hildenborough which is a short drive away from Childrensalon HQ.

She has two incredibly sweet twins, Kit and Rex, who are two years old. Kit loves Duplo; he loves the animals and characters but he particularly loves to build towers. Rex is currently really enjoying a garden game that they have made up, which is called ‘Where’s Mummy Gone?” - it sounds suspiciously similar to hide and seek!

We can imagine twins are a bit of a handful at the best of times, how has it been working from home with Kit and Rex?

It was a daunting prospect as two-year-olds need constant attention and my husband and I both had to work from home. Typically, both of them dropped their afternoon naps just after lockdown started, which had been a useful time for us both to work, so that certainly added to the challenge! They are happy little boys though and have each other for company which helps.

Are there any family traditions that you’ve had to adapt to stay safe at home?

We had their 2nd birthdays just after lockdown started, which was a shame as we had planned to take them to the zoo. Luckily, they are a little too young to know much about it and it was sunny so we just spent the day in the garden playing. I made them a Hey Duggee themed chocolate birthday cake which they were very excited by! We have also done a lot of Facetime with Nana and Grandad and Grandpa as, due to lockdown, we haven’t been able to see them.

What activities have you been doing to learn and play, whilst staying safe at home? Tell us what your children like about each activity?

We read a lot of books, do colouring in and play with Play-Doh most days. Their vocabulary is growing from the reading and their favourites are Julia Donaldson books, but they also love The Little Mermaid and The Billy Goats Gruff. When we do colouring they ask us to draw things to colour in; mermaids and a rabbit with a carrot are currently the most popular requests!

Rex and Kit love the outdoors, we are fortunate to have a garden where they can run around and play. They love the sandpit and playing with buckets and spades, and another favourite activity is picking the flowers from our plants and collecting them. We hope they will grow out of that one!

Now that lockdown has relaxed a bit, we can go for a walk most days - their favourite walk is down a lane near our house to the fields which have sheep in them. They are obsessed with The Billy Goats Gruff book and like to look for the troll and goats when we walk over the bridge which crosses the stream, and also ‘trip trap’ over it stamping their feet. They also enjoy saying hello to dogs we meet and collecting things they find along the way, like fir cones, sticks, and flowers, which they’ll carry all the way home with them.
