Childrensalon Family Diaries | Bonnie Reay-Smith

Life in lockdown has changed the daily routine for most of us, including the majority of the team at Childrensalon. Our staff of nearly 500 is made up of talented, ambitious, and hardworking people from all over the globe, many of whom have children themselves. We wanted to go behind-the-scenes and give you a view of family life from some of our very own team-members at Childrensalon.

From homeschooling to ways to stay entertained, each family does it their own way. We are inviting you for a glimpse inside the family homes of our team to see how they are spending this time together.

- Meet the Reay-Smith Family -

Bonnie is the Lead Buyer and has been choosing the beautiful clothing for Childrensalon for 20 years. She grew up in Tunbridge Wells, where Childrensalon HQ is based, and still lives locally with her 14-month-old daughter, Rose.

During the heatwave that we’ve had here in the UK, Rose has loved splashing around in the paddling pool and playing chase. Now that parks and play areas are open again, she loves going down the slides!

How have you found balancing work during lockdown with parenting a young child?

I was at the end of my maternity leave just before lockdown began, so Rose and I had been spending our time in lovely baby groups, meeting up with other mums for playdates, and seeing our family. Once lockdown was announced, it was really difficult getting used to being so isolated so we tried to stay in touch with video chats and phone calls as much as possible.

I’m now back at work, from home, and Rose has started nursery, so it’s a totally new routine for both of us. The balancing act of parenting and working takes lots of energy and organisation, so early nights for me are essential.

Lockdown has meant we’ve all had to alter our daily routines. How do you usually structure your day with your daughter, and how does it differ to before?

Now Rose has started at her nursery, we wake up and have breakfast together along with our cat Pumpkin who meows for food every morning! After taking Rose to nursery, I go for a morning walk around the park to get some exercise, then sit down at my desk with a cup of tea ready to work. Once my working day is complete, I collect Rose and we spend a bit of time together in the garden or go for a walk around the park before the evening bed and bath time routine.

What to wear

What activities have you been doing to learn and play, whilst staying safe at home? Tell us what Rose likes about each activity?

We read lots of books. One of her favourites is All Kinds of People, which encourages children to celebrate diversity and equality from a young age, and Dear Zoo which has flaps that she loves to open with her tiny fingers – it’s so cute! We also go for walks in the parks near us where we feed the ducks. She likes watching the birds and the squirrels, she loves animals.

Another thing I do is set up sensory water play in the garden, where I fill either the paddling pool or a tub of water with lots of toys. She enjoys splashing! Kicking a big soft ball around the garden is a new activity that she’s started enjoying, which is great for her coordination. We also have a large bean bag in the garden which she likes to run at and jump on. She’s great fun to be with. We always listen to music, and she dances… actually, we both do!
