May Day is a celebration of the start of summer here in the UK, signalling warmer weather and the blossoming of flowers in gardens across the country. Traditionally celebrated with dancing around the maypole, crowning the May Queen and the gifting of May baskets containing sweet treats and floral bouquets, May Day festivities have been enjoyed for over 2000 years.
To celebrate May Day, we have partnered with crafting guru Hester @hestershandmadehome to provide you with a simple five-step process for creating your very own flower crown. The summer season provides a wealth of opportunities to showcase your masterpiece – weddings, fetes and festivals included.

You will need:
- Craft wire (thin metal wire covered in paper)
- Floral tape (be aware that the floral tape will become sticky when stretched)
- A pair of secateurs
- A pair of scissors
- A ball of string
- Flowers of your choice - we used eucalyptus, rosemary, veronica, snowflake roses, solidaster, wax flowers and ginestra
Step 1:
Measure the head of the person you are making the crown for using the piece of string. Wrap it around the head and cut off where the string meets to get the full-size head circumference.
Step 2:
Cut your craft wire to the exact same length of the string, plus leave a further 5 cm (2.5 cm at each end). Bend the wire into a circular shape. Using the 2.5cm extra wire at each end, twist both ends together and cover them with floral tape to prevent them from scratching the head or face.
Step 3:
Start adding the eucalyptus, rosemary and wax flowers to the ring, securing them in place with the floral tape, to create a leafy base.
Step 4:
Add the colourful flowers to the crown, securing them in place with floral tape.
Step 5:
Continue adding the flowers all the way around until you are happy with your crown. For smaller children, we recommend you make a half crown, so the bit at the back is left with just the covered wire.
Your crown is now ready to wear!
