The history behind Memorial Day in the USA is that it honours the national military men and women who have died whilst serving their country.
On this day - traditionally observed on the last Monday of May - it's declared a federal holiday (also known as public holiday) and families use this as an opportunity to not only pay their respects to the fallen soldiers but to spend quality time together. Many big cities across the USA celebrate with large parades – most famously Chicago, New York and Washington DC.
The two days preceding create the perfect opportunity for a long weekend - Memorial Day Weekend - and families use this extended holiday to head off on trips and to host barbecues with friends. One of the most popular destinations is the beach as the timely date unofficially marks the start of summer.
We reached out to Kettelyn @bykettelyn and cute daughter Mia who will be heading to the beach this Memorial Day on 31 May. Here she shares Mia's top picks for the perfect day in the sun and sand.
"As we were playing in the sand, we asked Mia 'What is Memorial Day?'" We told her it's a day to remember men and women who fought for us and our country so that we can be free to live in a safe and secure place ..."
Little Mia's picks are so fresh and fun. A white cotton dress is a must for all summer long and what would an outfit be without a cute beach bag?
About the outfit...
"Mia picked her own swimsuit and I couldn’t resist the beautiful Monnalisa white strawberry swimsuit. I love the cute open back, the ruffles on the front and super-sweet strawberry print, perfect for Memorial Day. We also fell in love with the white and gold cotton dress by Tartine et Chocolat. The designer has the most stunning, classic meets chic wear and they stay true to their French heritage. Again, we love the ruffles and the delicate gold embroidery. We paired the dress with a gorgeous straw tote bag by Chloé and a pair of Mayoral white faux leather sandals perfect for our mini family vacation.
"We had so much fun building sandcastles, counting our footprints in the sand and most importantly making memories..."
