The Changing Bag

First things first: a changing bag. We've got lots of styles to choose from, all with handy features that make parenting on the go a little easier.

A Soft Touch

No items will work harder in your changing bag than a muslin cloth, a spare babygrow, and their favourite cuddly toy.

The Changing Bag Heroes

Muslins are a must-have in every baby changing bag, and these multi-tasking squares of cotton will be a regular feature in your baby’s routine. The role of a muslin comes in many guises: one minute you’ll be using it as a burping cloth, the next, to wipe up a spill. So having a few stowed away will ensure you’re covered throughout the day, especially whilst on the move.

Talking of spills, the next thing you'll want to consider is a change of clothes. There’s plenty of choice when shopping for babygrows and vests, and they are great for throwing in your changing bag if your baby has a little leak or is being particularly dribbly. For the multitasking parent, Petite Bateau’s cotton multipack is a great place to start. You’ll always have one to hand, even if the rest are in the wash, and the beautiful tonal shades set the tone for a stylish day out. My Little Pie's adorable scratch mitts are also great to have within easy reach, and they won't take up any space in your already overflowing bag.

Mealtime Moments

Life with a little one will revolve around their next mealtime, so prepping your changing bag with plenty of food is key. When storing milk on the move, the general rule of thumb is that it should be consumed within two hours at room temperature or four hours if stored in an insulated cool bag or bottle holder. Many of our changing bags actually come with these included, so that's one less thing to tick off your newborn checklist. Look to the likes of BOSS for handy four-piece bottle and dummy sets, and Swedish brand Elodie for a chic statement piece you won’t want to hide away in your bag for long. They all come with soft silicone teats and they’re also BPA-free, meaning no nasty chemicals and peace of mind for you whilst feeding.

When your baby starts eating solids, be sure to pack some cutlery like Sophie la Grirafe's silicone-handled set. A sippy cup will also be a new addition to your feeding line-up. Danish designer Liewood puts the fun in functional with its collection of dishwasher-safe styles. The flexible silicone is hardwearing, making it durable enough to throw in your bag (or out of a pram), whilst the easy-to-grip handles help to support your baby’s fine motor skills.

Baby's First Bib

That’s the feeding accessories sorted, now to catch those spills with a stylish bib.

Catching Crumbs

It goes without saying, feeding an infant on the go produces quite the mess. And the last thing you want is their beautiful new outfit getting spoilt by baby food. Whether you’re out for a picnic at the park or a quick bite in the local cafe, packing the right bib will ensure a clean baby and an untouched look underneath (or so we hope). As you’ll already know, bibs really do come in all shapes, sizes and fabrics. The eco-conscious will have their eye on this organic cotton number from Pippi, whilst practicality is best served with maximum coverage, thanks to CeLaVi’s wipe-clean aprons. And bibs don’t get much cuter than Elodie’s; you’ll want a trunkful of these adorable elephant designs, which also come with a useful pouch to catch falling food — adorable and practical, just how we like it.

Let’s Play

From cute teethers to sensory books, pack your bag with toys to keep your little one entertained.

Toys from A to B

When packing your baby bag, it can be easy to get distracted by the practicalities of parenting: changing nappies, feeding, nap time. But no outing would be complete without the in-pram entertainment to keep your tiny one smiling and giggling all the way to your destination. Naturally, there will be times when you're on the move where your baby won't get your undivided attention, and that’s where our toys come in.

Not only do early-years toys support cognitive development, but they also provide a valuable moment of calm for your busiest moments. Rainbow Designs sensory books are perfect for keeping baby occupied, with vivid colours, cute characters and crackly textures to keep them engaged on every page. If they’re at the teething stage, Sophie la Girafe also deserves a mention. A saviour for many a parent, the brand’s range includes chewable toys and teethers to help soothe sore gums.

A Few More Essentials

Of course, whatever your day entails will determine what else needs to go with you. For changes, spare nappies, nappy bags and baby wipes will make it into every bag you pack. And to soothe them afterwards? Barrier cream is a must.

Also, don’t forget to leave some space in the bag for your own entertainment. Sitting in the park with a sleepy baby will give you time to unwind, so why not pack a magazine or good book to enjoy in the sunshine? Ultimately, when you’re out and about, it’s important to remember you’re not alone and other parents will be happy to help if you’re having a bad day. Psychotherapist and bestselling author of Mind over Mother Anna Mathur started the Ribbon Movement in the hopes that it’d unite parents in what can often be an isolating time. The idea is that you tie a ribbon to your changing bag or buggy to show you’re willing to help struggling parents and vice versa. This can be anything from borrowing a nappy to having a friendly chat and offering support to one another.

Now that your changing bag is packed, we’re confident you’ll have everything you need to explore the world with your new baby.
