The World of Mini Rodini

Loved for its fun prints, Swedish label Mini Rodini is on every cool kid’s wish list. Behind the brand is Cassandra Rhodin, illustrator, animal lover and mum. As a new season calls, Cassandra joins us to talk inspiration, eco credentials and her new collection, which is anything but ordinary . . .

Hi, Cassandra. Thanks for joining us today! Let’s go back to the start: what inspired the creation of your beloved brand?

Hi, Childrensalon! Thanks for having me! I founded Mini Rodini when I was 25 and expecting my second son. At the time, I was working as an illustrator for magazines like Nylon and Vogue. Kids’ clothes were so boring back then, just stereotypical gender designs produced in conventional ways: either flames and trucks or butterflies. So I decided to do something about it, and Mini Rodini was born! I started mixing my own prints and designs, producing the garments in sustainable (or as sustainable as could be found back then) materials. It was an instant hit with parents all over the world.

What does a typical (or not-so-typical) day look like for you at Mini Rodini HQ?

Lots and lots of meetings with my different teams. I’m the creative director of the brand, and I design the collections, shoot the images, and lead the creative work, so most of my day revolves around all that. I also work from home quite a lot, as it limits impressions and helps me stay focused outside the buzz of the office.

How do you hope kids feel wearing your clothing?

"I hope they feel great, comfortable and that it matches their mood."

Talk us through your creative process; what inspires your illustrations and how do you translate them into designs that kids love?

I take inspiration from everything, from wildlife and pop culture to the fantasy and free spirit of children and nature. I always try to challenge myself with the illustrations and make them fun to create. Often, I even have a specific personality in mind when I draw them, which helps bring the designs to life.

As an eco-conscious brand, how does Mini Rodini look out for the next generation of planet pioneers?

Good question, and an important one. The clothing industry is the second largest polluter in the world. As long as we produce a better product than what’s on the conventional market, I feel that Mini Rodini has a reason to exist. The ambition has always been to make high-quality, long-lasting clothes that kids can enjoy, without compromising on environmental and social aspects of production.

What advice would you give your 10-year-old self?

"Be kind to yourself!"

Clothing is a wonderful form of self-expression. How important is it that children have the freedom to wear what they feel good in?

It's super important. We should just let kids be kids without stereotypes setting the rules.

We love the alien and space prints in your new Alien Affairs collection. Tell us about the inspiration behind these.

For this collection, Mini Rodini has transformed into an intergalactic travel agency. I was thinking about what it would be like if a company like us offered space tours, rather than the tech oligarchs who are doing it now. It's my version of a utopian space travel agency, heading off toward the occasional rainbow, the Milky Way, and beyond!

What’s new for Mini Rodini? What can our customers look forward to seeing from you next season?

I'm really into our new Pre-Fall SS26 collection. I hope you will love it as much as we do — table tennis is a big inspiration this time, that’s all I’m saying for now, so watch this space!

And last but not least, what do you value most in parenting?

I try not to aim for perfection, and I give myself plenty of room to learn. Motherhood can be a judgemental environment sometimes, there are so many dos and don’ts. But in the end, the only thing that truly matters is raising kids who bring love into the world and treat others with respect.
