An Abu Dhabi Adventure

There’s nothing like a family holiday to make memories that will last a lifetime, especially when your children are young. But where to go? And what to do when you get there? We're here to be your guide! Our travel series follows families on their fun-packed trips around the world, offering first-hand insight into the best destinations to visit and, of course, what Childrensalon essentials they’ll be packing in their kids’ suitcases.

Our first stop this summer takes us to the Arabian Gulf where we join designer and artist Fatima Al Mehairbi on an Abu Dhabi adventure with her two-year-old son Matar. With ice creams in hand, she tells us the best places to stay and things to do in the capital with little ones in tow, and we couldn’t be more excited to hear all about it! Over to you, Fatima . . .

Let the Adventure Begin

The Sun Shop

“My most cherished childhood memories were made in Abu Dhabi; and exploring it now through Matar’s eyes makes me fall in love with my hometown all over again."

My name is Fatima Al Mehairbi. I’m a designer and founder of the Abu Dhabi-based design boutique, Kan Yama Kan. Since having Matar, I’ve been passionate about documenting my journey through motherhood, and both Matar’s dad and I enjoy making parenting part of our travels, adventures and family outings.

What we love about staycationing in the city — or the UAE in general — is that it’s so diverse. There are so many toddler-friendly facilities almost everywhere you go — and it always feels welcoming. There really isn’t a place you can go that doesn’t offer something to entertain your little ones . . . here are just some of our favourites!

Always at Sea

“As native Abu Dhabians, the sea will always feel like home — after all, Abu Dhabi is an island. Beach time with Matar is a weekly destination.”

Al Bateen Ladies Club by Matcha

One of my favourite spots in Abu Dhabi for a little mama escape is Al Bateen Ladies Club by Matcha. It’s ladies-and-children only, super aesthetic, and has the dreamiest pool facilities and beach. It’s honestly hard to believe it’s right in the middle of the city, but it feels like you’re on a quiet island resort. We love going early in the morning (they open at 7 am!) when everything’s calm and peaceful. It’s perfect for mummy meet-ups or even solo time to recharge. Their cafe and restaurant are lovely, and they have a cute boutique with local brands I always end up browsing through.

What to eat while you’re there: Matar loves their peanut butter and dates smoothie. I love their Turkish eggs for breakfast (and they’ll serve it to you wherever you choose to sit!).

What Matar Wore: Ralph Lauren’s long-sleeved swim top is essential for pool time. It’s made with UPF50+ fabric, which keeps Matar covered in the sun. We styled it with these butter-yellow swim shorts from Liewood and a sweet sun hat. And this Mitty James towelling poncho is ideal for drying off after the pool.

Adventures in the City

“Umm Al Emarat Park is one of those places that never gets old. Matar loves the splash area, and especially the petting zoo with native animals!”

Umm Al Emarat Park

Umm Al Emarat Park is one of those places that never gets old. It's been around since 1982 and has been beautifully and sustainably restored over the years. It's such a lovely, educational space to explore with kids. The park is filled with native plants, and there's a stunning botanical garden that always feels so peaceful. On weekends, they host a farmers’ market, and there are often seasonal events and outdoor movies for the little ones. Matar loves the splash area, playground, and especially the petting zoo with native animals!

What to eat while you’re there: Parker’s has a creative selection of food, but most importantly for Matar and me, they always update their décor according to the season, and it’s always fun to see.

What Matar wore: Matar loved his lightweight Paloma de la O outfit set — it’s made in linen and cotton, so it’s nice and breathable in the heat. And these comfy Children’s Classics leather loafers were perfect for adventures on foot!

A Day at the Palace

"The views at Emirates Palace Mandarin Oriental are breathtaking, with the beach and pool areas offering the best of Abu Dhabi’s stunning coastline."

Emirates Palace Mandarin Oriental

There’s nothing quite like Emirates Palace Mandarin Oriental, especially if you’re visiting from out of town. The views are absolutely breathtaking, with the beach and pool areas giving you the best of Abu Dhabi’s stunning coastline. What I love most is that it’s fun for the whole family. The kids’ club is amazing — Matar always has the best time there, and it gives us parents a chance to relax and soak it all in. They also offer incredible summer camps that are so thoughtfully put together, making it a great option for longer stays or return visits.

What to eat while you’re there: They offer complimentary ice cream by the pool — Matar looks forward to it every time, and honestly, so do we. The hotel has several beautiful restaurant options, but one of our favourites is Café Fountain. Their Umm Ali dessert and cappuccino are a must and we love their afternoon tea, especially when we’re in the mood for something a little special.

What Matar Wore: Matar looked so smart in his Beatrice & George buster suit, complete with the sweetest sailor collar. For his footwear, we chose another pair of Children’s Classics loafers, this time in buttery-soft suede.

Where to Stay in Abu Dhabi with Kids

The Abu Dhabi Edition Hotel is our go-to staycation spot — it’s close to all our favourite family destinations in Al Bateen. The views of the sea are always beautiful, and having so many great restaurants just steps away makes outings with Matar so easy and enjoyable.

If we’re in the mood for a proper beach escape, the St. Regis Saadiyat Island Resort never disappoints. The pool facilities are amazing for the whole family, and the beach is hands-down the most beautiful sandy stretch in Abu Dhabi. They have a fantastic kids’ club and lots of thoughtful details that make traveling with little ones easier.

Fatima's Top Tips for Travelling with Kids

  • We always keep a couple of books in our bag — it’s such a great way to keep little ones calm and engaged on the go.

  • I try to book nighttime flights whenever possible so Matar can sleep through most of the journey.

  • Fun snacks are a must, along with plenty of water to stay hydrated.

  • If we have new toys, I bring them along and let him discover one every other day to keep things exciting.

  • I never travel without a battery-powered fan — you never know when it’ll get too warm for a toddler, especially in outdoor spots.

  • A lightweight stroller is also essential. It doesn’t need to be fancy — just easy to fold and carry around.

But honestly, the biggest tip I can give is to embrace parenthood fully. It’s okay to have your child with you wherever you go, even when dining out or exploring. Matar is used to being a part of our day, and that’s just how we travel. If it’s your lifestyle, it naturally becomes theirs too.

What three songs are on your summer playlist?

• My current favourite: Banana Pancakes (Jack Johnson)

• Matar’s current favourite: Going to the Zoo (Raffi feat. Ken Whiteley)

• An Arabic classic: Nassam Alayna El Hawa (Fairuz)

What is Matar’s favourite thing to eat on holiday?

Smoothies! I can always sneak lots of healthy ingredients in there.

What did Matar love wearing the most?

His beach outfit — especially the towel poncho. And his beach toys, of course!

If you could only pack one thing in your suitcase, what would it be?

His favourite books. It’s what he loves the most.

Where’s your next dream holiday destination?

Matar’s dream would be an African safari in Kenya — he loves animals, nature, and adventures.
