With all the grown-ups buzzing around Milan Fashion Week, we thought we’d take a closer look at Italian style for little ones! Known for their elegance, incredible craftsmanship and keen eye for detail, Italians always dress their children beautifully, whether it be in flamboyant colour and pattern or traditional hand-finished clothing designed to be passed down through generations. What better country to visit for a few pointers on getting dressed then?

In fact, we're so spoilt for choice we decided to turn the spotlight on our beautiful Italian brands to discover exactly how they get it so right. After hours of study fuelled by babyccinos, we've narrowed it down to five simple steps.

Layer up prints for a fun mix-and-clash effect . . .
A love of exciting pattern is woven into the Italian DNA, with heritage brands like PUCCI and Missoni creating whole collections based on their distinctive prints and intricate designs. We love Dolce & Gabbana’s pattern explosion and, of course, Versace’s prints will always add an Italian flourish. Kids will love adding pops of pattern with accessories or layering up for a fun mix-and-clash effect.

Let's not forget the classics were born in Rome, so it's no wonder the Italians have a head start in this department. Traditional wool coats, knitwear and smart separates are definitely keystones of Italian design. The beautifully finished plaid coats at Gucci will elevate your little one’s outerwear, while Il Gufo is our go-to label for traditional outfits with a twist. For babies, we love Emporio Armani and Fendi for the sweetest ensembles with a heritage feel.

3. Embrace Colour
Don't be afraid to colour clash or wear one colour from top to toe . . .
Italian clothing has a lot in common with Italian cooking: plenty of colour and bold flavour! If your little one loves rainbow brights, try Monnalisa, MSGM, Moschino and PUCCI. Italian label Moncler Enfant is also a great choice for colour-pop casuals. Layer up a single colour for a top-to-toe luxurious feel or break things up with a mix of two or three colours for a delicious tricolore effect.

In Italy, you're never fully dressed without a smile . . .
A warm sense of humour is a key Italian trait, and that definitely extends to their fun and fabulous childrenswear.
