Colour Play | Dressing To Feel Good

What’s their favourite colour? Whether they’re energised by red, buoyed by blues or at their happiest wearing a rainbow, chances are your little ones have been considering their colour choices for a while now. In fact, babies of just three months old can start to show clear preferences as their eyes develop the ability to distinguish different hues.

One US study on colours and emotions asked five-and six-year-olds: “how does [the colour] make you feel?” Every child had an emotional response to the colour in question, with 69% experiencing a positive reaction, such as contentment or excitement. Colour us happy!

Dialling up the dopamine for sunny days, our shoot “Colour Play” celebrates the joy of dressing colourfully through four vibrant colour “stories” – Rainbow Brights, Cool Blues, Sorbet Shades and Botanical Hues. “It’s all about children having fun, wearing their favourite colours and feeling their best selves,” says Childrensalon’s head of buying, Dina Moon.

A series of illustrations by London-based artist Natalia Bagniewska brings our shoot to life. “Seeing colour through a child’s eyes was my inspiration,” she says. “I want to make people smile and feel a little happy feeling in their belly.” Natalia has also created a colourful scavenger hunt, exclusively for Childrensalon, which will be appearing in order boxes over the coming weeks. “It will hopefully get children away from screens for a bit – seeing the world in a slightly different way and bringing colour into what they're doing,” says Natalia.

Whatever their favourite shade, from pretty pastels to vibrant hues, there is a mood-boosting kaleidoscope for them to discover. We hope they (and you) will have fun doing it!

More Ways To Have Fun With Colour

1. Make Their Plate A Rainbow
Ask your child to draw a picture of a rainbow, using their best colouring skills, or help them to do it. Take your picture to the table when you eat and compare it to your plate (you will need different fruits and vegetables for this one!). Can you see any veggies? What is their colour? Mark it on the rainbow picture. What about fruits? Another mark on your picture for those. And then eat them up! Keep the rainbow safe afterwards and bring it out for mealtimes.

2. Get Out In Nature
This is a twist on the traditional scavenger hunt, but instead of looking for objects, your child is looking for colours. Ask them to see if they can find something in every colour of the rainbow! You can create your own scavenger hunt, or use Natalia’s specially designed version from your next Childrensalon order. This is perfect for a rainy day at home, too.

3. Play A Sorting Game
This one is great for pre-walkers (and toddlers!). Simply line any small boxes you have with different coloured paper and together collect an assortment of toys in corresponding colours. Ask your little one if they want to help you to sort the toys into the same-coloured boxes. Let’s play!
