Love To Layer | How To Mix And Match Their Wardrobe

Life with children is nothing if not busy and getting their wardrobe right can be tougher than it looks. From activities one moment to a friend’s house the next (plus changeable weather), is a failsafe outfit formula that can roll with the changes too much to wish for?

Not at all, says Childrensalon’s senior fashion stylist Anna Eastman. The word you are looking for is layering. Having a roster of practical pieces that you can add or subtract, depending on what your kids are up to next means that they (and you) will be ready for anything.

Of course, it’s not simply about piling everything on and hoping for the best – your child may not forgive you, after all. You need a strategy – and as a mother and a stylist, Anna knows a trick or two. “Light layers, such as tees worn under jackets, and a sweatshirt tied around the waist, mean you can change the look up or down, no matter what Mother Nature has in store,” she recommends.

Wherever your little one is off to, Anna shows how to make their wardrobe work hard, feel good and have a little fun in the process. Love to layer? We think they really will.

Behind The Scenes With Anna Eastman

We caught up with Anna behind the scenes of our recent shoot to discover her secrets to perfect layering. Read on to find out how to curate four impeccably styled outifts to cover all their favourite activities.

For The Great Outdoors

Anna Says . . .

"When setting off on a long walk with kids, you need to have layers at the ready. Shorts are great for keeping them cool while walking. When paired with wellies, they'll be fully prepared for puddles or splashing through rivers. Light jackets can be kept on hand for rain showers – they’ll be working up a sweat, so keep the layers light."

For Match Day Mix-Ups

Anna Says...

"This look is perfect for changing into after school sports. Alternatively a Saturday match before heading home or out for the afternoon. Adding a cosy knitted layer to sportswear is comfortable and smartens up the look."

For Play Dates

Anna Says...

"Play dates and weekend trips to the park need a cosy and comfortable approach to getting dressed. I've gone for a fun Mini Rodini co-ord - kids can easily style these pieces themselves, picking them out from their wardrobe as a matching set. None of the materials are restrictive – meaning they can roll on the floor, build dens, jump on the sofa and tear in and out of the house to their heart’s content."

For Days In The City

Anna Says...

"This is all about being prepared for urban explorations. There are multiple layers in case they get hot – especially when dashing in and out of galleries, theatres and restaurants. It’s a versatile look that will ensure they're set for any change in temperature (so that no amount of bad weather will be able to spoil their fun). Although don't forget to pack your umbrella just in case!"
