Let's Get Crafty

To set the scene for spring, our friend Hester van Overbeek and her daughter Kiki share with us a fun craft activity that the whole family can enjoy this Easter. With help from her furry sidekick Kermit, together they show us how to transform eggshells or wooden eggs into beautiful works of art! These sweet creations make thoughtful Easter gifts and add a delightful touch to any table, especially if you're planning an Easter tea party! Have a go yourself, and don’t forget to share your egg-cellent creations with us on Instagram @childrensalon.

And for the perfect tea-party outfits, our Easter collection is home to the most beautiful spring clothes for girls and boys of all ages.

Make Your Own Floral Egg

You will need: Eggs, a pin, a straw, a bowl, a selection of dried flowers and petals, a paintbrush, glue varnish (Hester recommends Mod Podge Matte).

Step 1: Start by piercing a small hole in the top and bottom of your egg with your pin. It helps to leave the eggs in their box for this part.

Step 2: Using the pin, carefully wiggle it around to make the bottom hole slightly larger. Be careful not to crack your egg!

Step 3: Place the straw over the smaller hole and, taking a big breath, blow out the contents of the egg into a bowl and save them for later. Kiki recommends using them to bake a cake!

Step 4: It's time to get creative! Apply a thin layer of the glue varnish all over the egg then arrange your flowers and petals in any pattern you like.

Step 5: Seal them in place with another thin layer of the glue varnish and leave them to dry. Don’t worry if it appears white at first, it will dry clear. And there you have it, your own exquisite floral egg to display with pride.

Top Tip: Pop your wooden eggs into an egg carton before you start decorating to stop them rolling away!

Decorate Your Own Wooden Eggs

Short on time? No worries! Kiki and Hester have a quick and creative idea for you. Instead of eggshells, try decorating wooden eggs that you can pick up from your local craft shop. These little treasures last long after the chocolate has disappeared, and they make lovely keepsakes you can hang up year after year. The best part is each egg can be as colourful, fun or sparkly as your imagination allows.

All you need are a few extra bits and pieces:

- Wooden eggs

- Marker pens

- String, twine, or ribbon for hanging

Now it’s time to get creative! Will your eggs shine with bold stripes, dance with playful polka dots or bloom with delicate flowers like Kiki and Kermit’s? We can’t wait to see the amazing designs you come up with.

When your creations are ready, turn them into bowl arrangements, Easter table centrepieces or adorable basket fillers.
