Childrensalon Family Diaries | Leo Maxlhaieie

Life in lockdown has changed the daily routine for most of us, including the majority of the team at Childrensalon. Our staff of nearly 500 is made up of talented, ambitious, and hardworking people from all over the globe, many of whom have children themselves. We wanted to go behind-the-scenes and give you a view of family life from some of our very own team-members at Childrensalon.

From homeschooling to ways to stay entertained, each family does it their own way. We are inviting you for a glimpse inside the family homes of our team to see how they are spending this time together.

- Meet the Maxlhaieie Family -

Leo has been working at Childrensalon for just over a year and a half now, where he works as a Picking and Packing Assistant. Originally from Mozambique, he is now based in Sevenoaks which is about 10 miles from Childrensalon HQ.

He has two adorable children: Marley who is three, and Lilia who is eleven months. Marley loves the outdoors; running, playing in mud, sand or puddles, and riding his bike. Lilia loves all the same things, always wanting to be with her older brother.

How have you found balancing work during lockdown with two young children?

In the beginning, I found it difficult to adapt to working around them. This is particularly hard as in the morning when my wife puts Lilia down for a nap, Marley will often come to me asking to go for a bike ride or wanting to play and I have to say no because I’m working.

What has been the most positive thing about lockdown for you as a family?

It’s been nice to be home with the family every day for a long period. We’ve had a chance to learn more about each other, and we have been able to do some fun activities together like baking, and we’ve planted vegetables in the garden and have been watching them grow. In the mornings we also enjoy dancing together to some southern African beats.

Most of all we have been reminded of how special and enjoyable the simple things are, and to value our good health and happiness in the present moment.

What activities have you been doing to learn and play, whilst staying safe at home? Tell us what your children like about each activity?

Lilia has learnt to both crawl and walk during lockdown, so she will be emerging from this time as a fully mobile little girl! Instead of challenging herself at soft play places, we’ve had a lot of ‘build your own’ rough and tumble play with cushions from the sofa – that has been a lot of fun for her (and us).

Marley has been on his balance bike in the garden or the parking area outside our house every single day, he has made friends with a number of our neighbours’ kids, who we didn’t know before lockdown. The situation has introduced our whole street to each other and now the kids have all made friends – it’s wonderful!

As a family we’ve spent a lot of time in the garden; planting a vegetable patch and tending to that each day, eating most of our meals outside, and lots of barbecues where we’ve enjoyed my famous piri-piri style chicken from Mozambique. We’ve had a lot of fun playing with sand and water outside as well.

We have had some rainy days inside, thankfully not too many as our kids much prefer to be outside, but on those days we enjoyed reading, watching movies with homemade popcorn, and of course plenty of baking bread, cakes, and treats.
