Homemade with Hunter | Christmas Cookie Recipe

We've been following little Hunter for a while now and one of the things we enjoy most is when he cooks. We caught up with mum Chloe to share Hunter's favourite festive cookie recipe as a fun activity you can do at home in the lead up to Christmas.

Chloe says

"I never really tried much cooking with my eldest Carter, who’s now four, as he has so many allergies, so it was just something that never really came to mind with him. He loves arts and crafts, and we always stuck to that side of things as he’s never been a big eater either.

Hunter has always loved his food and I had a few people ask me to do cooking videos with him, so that’s where it all began! He absolutely loved getting messy, eating the food along the way and also the one-on-one time together. This is something we do just the two of us, similarly, I take his brother Carter to tennis. It’s always nice to be able to spend quality time with the kids together and as individuals.
Hunter makes me laugh so much when he’s cooking because he just does the funniest things, and he can never resist licking the spoon at every given opportunity!"

- YOU WILL NEED -

- A rolling pin
- A wooden spoon
- A mixing bowl
- Grease proof paper
- A baking tray
- Shape cutters

- INGREDIENTS -

- 225g unsalted butter (you can use any butter but if you want to make them vegan I recommend using Stork original - we made up another batch for Carter using this as he’s allergic to milk)
- 60g icing sugar
- 260g plain flour

To decorate
-
Caster sugar
- Coloured icing pens if you want to decorate

- HOW TO MAKE CHRISTMAS COOKIES -

1. Make sure the butter is at room temperature then add the icing sugar, mixing it together in a bowl.

2. Add the flour and stir again to combine.

3. Use your hands to squish the mixture together into a ball and place it between two sheets of grease proof paper.

4. Use a rolling pin to roll the dough until it's around half an inch thick.

5. Place the dough in the fridge for around 15 minutes to cool. Meanwhile, preheat the oven to 180°C.

6. Remove the mixture from the fridge and cut it into your desired shapes.

7. Bake the cookies in the oven for about 12 minutes.

8. You can either wait until they're cold to decorate with icing pens, or sprinkle with a little caster sugar!

How long has Hunter been cooking?

I did the first video of Hunter cooking when he was about 18 months, this was the first time he’d ever tried cooking, I’d had a lot of messages asking for Hunter to cook, so I thought, alright let’s do it and see how he gets on, and he loved it! The first thing he made was tacos. I like to keep his recipes fairly simple so it’s nice and easy for him!

Where does he get his enthusiasm for cooking from?

I actually have no idea, I’m not a very good cook at all, he’s way better than I am! I suppose it comes from his love of food, he’s always been a bit of a foodie, and he loves getting his hands dirty and stuck into new things so cooking just seemed to come as second nature to him! He has so much fun doing it, and we always end up laughing so hard whenever we cook together!

What will you be doing as a family at Christmas?

We have a really big family so this year’s definitely going to be a little different for us! We will try to see as many people around Christmas as we are able to even if that means meeting for long walks outside, but Christmas Day will just be the 4 of us spending some quality time together, eating good food, opening presents and snuggling watching movies, and we can’t wait. The kids will have the best time and I can’t wait to see their little faces on Christmas morning! There’s nothing more magical than Christmas with kids is there?
