- 1856 -
THE COMPANY IS FOUNDED
After working as a drapery apprentince, 21-year-old Thomas Burberry opens a small shop in Basingstoke, Hampshire.
- 1888 -
THOMAS BURBERRY PATENTS GABARDINE
Thomas Burberry patents gabardine - a durable, weatherproof fabric that he'd invented in 1879.
- 1891 -
FIRST STORE OPENS IN LONDON
The first Burberry store opens in the West End of London at 30 Haymarket.
- 1901 -
EQUESTRIAN KNIGHT LOGO WAS TRADEMARKED
The equestrian knight logo is trademarked along with the slogan 'Prorsum' meaning 'forwards’.
- 1912 -
THE TRENCH COAT IS CREATED
Originally named the Tielocken, the iconic trench coat is commissioned by the War Office
to be worn by military personnel during the First World War.
- 1924 -
THE ICONIC BURBERRY CHECK IS FIRST INTRODUCED
Burberry's iconic Haymarket Check is first introduced in the lining of the trench coat.
- 1955 -
BURBERRY RECEIVES A ROYAL WARRANT
Burberry is awarded a Royal Warrant by the Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
- 2001 -
BURBERRY KIDSWEAR LAUNCHES
Burberry launches its first childrenswear collection, inspired largely by the adults collection and archival pieces. In this same year, Christopher Bailey becomes Design Director.
- 2014 -
CHRISTOPHER BAILEY IS APPOINTED CEO
Christopher Bailey is appointed Chief Executive Officer in addition to his Creative Director role, held since 2004.
MARCO GOBBETTI JOINS THE TEAM
The CEO of Celiné becomes Bailey's successor, leaving his position to take up the role of CEO. Bailey will transition to the role of President in addition to Chief Creative Officer.
