After working as a drapery apprentince, 21-year-old Thomas Burberry opens a small shop in Basingstoke, Hampshire.

 

- 1888 -

THOMAS BURBERRY PATENTS GABARDINE

Thomas Burberry patents gabardine - a durable, weatherproof fabric that he'd invented in 1879.


- 1891 -

FIRST STORE OPENS IN LONDON

The first Burberry store opens in the West End of London at 30 Haymarket.

EQUESTRIAN KNIGHT LOGO WAS TRADEMARKED

The equestrian knight logo is trademarked along with the slogan 'Prorsum' meaning 'forwards’.

THE TRENCH COAT IS CREATED

Originally named the Tielocken, the iconic trench coat is commissioned by the War Office
to be worn by military personnel during the First World War.
