1. SWIMWEAR

IN THE SWIM

After two years of seeking solace in our backyard paddling pools and hot tubs, we're all in need of some vitamin-sea. Never overlooking the importance of SPF and staying safe in the sun, looking cool (and cute) by the pool is top of our essentials list for even the littlest members of the family.

FOR GIRLS| Neon and tropical prints always set the vibe for summer, whether you're heading to far flung shores or simply escaping to the coast for the day. Nessi Byrd is one of our favourite swimwear designers for girls - this neon swimsuit ticks the boxes of two of the biggest swimwear trends this season - the asymmetric one shoulder and  belted waists.

FOR BOYS |  MC2 Saint Barth always showcase a collection of cool, eclectic prints on their swimshorts. If you're heading to Europe, retro-style trunks are still the choix de jour - in France, they're standard issue and you can't visit a public pool without a pair.

FOR BABIESFor baby, it goes without saying that float suits are the number one choice for safety, however, who can resist a teeny weeny bikini or a pair of tiny trunks?

2. LIGHTWEIGHT LAYERS

LIGHT-HEARTED LOOKS

During the height of summer, keep it simple in lightweight layers to change things up - and down - in the face of wavering temperatures.

FOR GIRLS | A sundress like this one by Stella McCartney Kids is the ultimate go-to.  Roll it up and pop it in your bag and pull it on easily over wet swimwear at the end of a long day at the beach.

FOR BOYS | Aside from everyday jersey T-shirts and shorts, linen separates go hand in hand with cool summer dressing as does short or roll-up sleeved shirts. Layer a linen shirt like this orange one from Mayoral over a T-shirt in place of a jacket and a pair of linen shorts with or without a drawstring, replace jeans as a comfortable everyday option worn with summer shoes or trainers.

FOR BABY | The same rules apply whether home or abroad and a carefully curated mix of pieces that can be layered on and taken off without baby getting too hot and niggly are key. We love cute little outfit sets with matching hats for all eventualities, like this one by Caramelo Kids or for boys a pair of shorts dungaress that can be worn with or without a T-shirt underneath.

3. SUN SHOES | Step it up

From sliders to slip-ons, sneakers and more, summer shoes need no introduction. For airing little sandy toes in sandals, to aqua shoes for exploring the ocean, shop the ultimate selection in our seasonal shoe edit.

4. ACCESSORIES

The finer details

More is more when it comes to accessories and summer is no exception.
We can't think of anything more essential than a pair of shades to protect delicate little peepers and we're looking to Stella McCartney Kids for inspiration this season. These rainbow sunglasses are top of our wish-list as are these cool round, yellow specs that pay homage to the designer's Rockstar roots. A lightweight bag such as this jersey drawstring swim bag by Boboli  helps keep wet swim wear separate and a bright, distinctive towel like this yellow one from BOSS Kidswear ensures there's no sibling quarrels over which one belongs to who.

5. SUN SAFE | Cool cover ups

When it comes to sun protectve swimwear, there's so much to choose from be it two piece sets, all in ones like this zip-up by Liewood, simple rash vests and swimsuits that just cover the arms, such as this one by Molo. Staying safe in the sun, however isn't just relying on sun protective swimwear on the beach and beside the pool - pack a selection of cover ups including towelling robes for younger kids and light, floaty kaftans and ponchos for girls. When shade isn't an option, reserve some space in your beach bag for a wide brimmed sun hat or baseballl cap.
