As the weather’s getting hotter and summer holidays are just around the corner, we spoke to Emily Cohen and Sabrina Jagger, founders of swimwear brand Sunuva.
Tell us how Sunuva was started as a brand.
We were introduced on holiday by our kids who were at nursery together. We chatted by the pool about the fact that we wanted our kids to wear UV protective swimwear but that we couldn’t find anything remotely stylish. The seed for Sunuva was planted and the brand has now grown into the holiday lifestyle collection that it is today. We have everything you need for your kid’s sunny holiday adventures!
We love your collections year on year. What inspires your sun safe designs?
Thank you! We love to travel and explore which inspires all of our collections. Peruvian fabrics from the markets, Sicilian lemons from Italy and tie-dye techniques from India are just a few of our inspirations for Sunuva swimwear.
Please give us your top three essential tips for keeping children safe in the sun
1. Keep children out of the sun from 12-3pm which are the hottest times of the day.
2. Wear a Sunuva rash vest which not only looks great, but saves reapplying cream on covered parts of the body.
3. Choose sunglasses with UV-400 lenses to protect children’s eyes, which are more susceptible to UV damage than adults.
What makes your swimwear the perfect choice for sun protection?
We make stylish children’s sun protection swimwear for kids that both parents and kids love. All of our prints are designed in-house in London, so you won’t find our designs anywhere else and we pride ourselves on our quality. Our kids UV swimwear is made with technical fabrics that offer UPF 50+ sun protection against the sun’s harmful rays without the addition of chemicals. We are proud to be validated by the British Skin Foundation and some of our fabrics are made from recycled bottles and fishing nets which are better for the environment. So all in all, Sunuva swimwear is the perfect choice for sun protection!
What’s your favourite sun care product for children?
We both love Roche Posay, which has products for all skin types for both adults and children. Many people are unaware of how vulnerable children can be to the sun's harmful rays.
Can you explain why sun protection is so important?
With the increasing numbers of skin melanomas and global warming, sun protection has never been more important. Even on overcast days, UV rays can still penetrate the clouds. Children’s young skin is extremely sensitive and has less pigmentation, which is why it is so important to protect them wherever possible.
What damage can be caused by overexposure to the sun?
Overexposure to the sun can cause skin damage, eye damage and skin cancer. However it is important to remember that some sun exposure together with a balanced diet to help make Vitamin D is important for healthy bones. It’s all about the balance.
