The Childrensalon Story in Collaboration with Condé Nast

CHAPTER ONE: 1930's

The beginning

Sybil MacGowan meets French Jazz pianist Réne Harriman and they fall in love. The arrival of their first child inspires Sybil to set up sewing circles for ladies wishing to dress their children beautifully.

CHAPTER TWO: 1940's

Sybil starts “Joy Models” named after Joy, their eldest daughter. She created wonderful hand-smocked and pleated traditional designs. Michele remembers being paid one penny per hour to pick up the pins from the floor!

CHAPTER THREE: 1960's

Sybil opens her first shop in Tunbridge Wells and names it “The Childrens Salon” after the French word for shop. Michele and her sister were models for Sybil’s catwalk shows. Advertising at the time? “After sales, comes service” and “Go Straight to the best!” are 2 of the most prophetical headlines.

CHAPTER FOUR: 1970's

Michele, Sybil’s daughter, meets the famous “Mamma Mia” illustrator George Smith and they fall in love. The Story continues with the second great partnership of The Childrensalon.

CHAPTER FIVE: 1980's

Michele follows in her mother’s footsteps visiting fashion shows and adding luxury designers whilst George brings his unique creativity to the business whilst still illustrating famous book covers.

CHAPTER SIX: 1990's

In 1999, Michele and George create The Childrens Salon website. Michele combines her role with coding the website and talking to customers on MSN Messenger; whilst George pioneers digital photography on the internet.

CHAPTER SEVEN: 2000's

Now called Childrensalon, the business grows very quickly. As the team gets bigger, more famous brands are added and the company grows into the biggest online childrenswear store in the world, winning many awards with the finest designers.

CHAPTER EIGHT: TODAY

With a family of over 300 people helping customers dress their children beautifully, Childrensalon sells to over 160 countries. Michele and George’s vision of being the best loved childrenswear shop has come true. And they are still having fun!
